Cut tops from artichokes and remove hearts. In a bowl combine olive oil, dry white wine, chopped garlic, onion, parsley, oregano, salt, and pepper to taste. Place artichoke hearts in pan just large enough to hold them and pour mixture over them. Cover tightly and simmer slowly for 45 minutes, adding more wine and olive oil if necessary.
